Judi Culbertson
Judi Culbertson's messy life changed
dramatically in 1975 when she and
her family rented a beach cottage
for a week. The kitchen held just
what they needed to prepare meals --
no duplicates or exotic tools.
Nothing got lost! She came home and
got to work, determined to have
"that vacation house feeling" for
the rest of her life.
For the next 25 years she worked as
a social worker and published five
books with her husband, Tom Randall,
starting with PERMANENT PARISIANS in
1986 and ending with PERMANENT
ITALIANS in1996. These were
illustrated, biographical guidebooks
to the cemeteries and famous
residents of various cities and
countries, and were published by
Chelsea Green and Walker Books.
During this time Judi also earned an
MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont
College and published a suspense
novel, THE NURSERY in 1996 with St.
Martin's Press. Her writing has also
appeared in Woman's Day, Glamour,
Cosmopolitan, Working Mother, The
New York Times, Newsday, The
Washington Post, and many other
places. She is a member of the
American Society of Journalists and
Authors.
In 1996 she began presenting
workshops on "How to Declutter and
Simplify Your Life," joined the
National Association of Professional
Organizers, and published a
quarterly newsletter, "Traveling
Light". Over the years her approach
has broadened from clearing out and
organizing cluttered spaces to
helping people transform uninspired
rooms into places they love.
When not writing, she enjoys
reading, making art, traveling, and
playing with her twin baby
grandchildren, Andrew and Emily, and
her Siamese kittens, Vladimir and
Ignatz. She has finally found that
"vacation house feeling" in a
two-bedroom apartment in New York
City.
